Starting in 2025, the Bavarian Surveying Administration (German: Bayerische Vermessungsverwaltung) will make comprehensive tree data for the entire state of Bavaria available as open data.
This dataset includes the height and precise geographical location of all trees, identified assumedly using artificial intelligence methods—such as deep learning—applied to aerial imagery and digital terrain models. (The result is not perfect but already impressive!)
Use this map to explore about one million trees recorded across Munich’s districts in the 2024 dataset. Simply hover your mouse over any tree to see its height in meters.
The map’s source code and creation details are available on Github.
